TS Eliot and pop culture

There may seem to be little common ground between a “serious” (and some say seriously depressing)  poet like TS Eliot and pop culture. Yet,  the sentiments expressed in Eliot’s poetry; the angst,  the despair and a sense of loss is what haunts modern life and modern pop culture.

That sentiments embedded in Gerontion and Portrait of a Lady should find a counterpart in Sam Kim’s Who are You is unsurprising, particularly considering the underlying emotions of the TV series Goblin which features the song.

The theme of seasons and the degradation of religious significance, present in the memorable opening lines of Journey of the Magi, is nicely complemented by the secular consumerist modernity of Let it snow. And you can have another taste of my singing here: https://soundcloud.com/judith-loewe/rhapsodies-2  LOL

Lines from Rhapsody on a Windy Night exploring a surreal, nighttime, urban landscape and Cai Qin’s 被遗忘的时光 may present a strange contrast initially. However, the stirring of memories amid modern degradation is a strand that runs through both.

Dilemma

Not sure if I should celebrate or cry: 80% set to quit my job and go back to school.

On the one hand, there should be more time for social media and writing.

On the other hand, it's bills, bills and more bills...

Maybe I'll get a treat instead of a trick if I asked. Hope springs eternal yeah?

Happy Halloween everyone!

Something's Afoot

I'm not particularly fond of conspiracy theories but I'm not believer in coincidences, so what are the chances of an older story getting 50 votes a day for the last couple of days? Go figure. The most boring and logical explanation is the decision by some reader(s) to systematically screw up the voting system on my stories if not others.

And while you're there, have a read!

But only if you're up to the challenge LOL

Story Idea Innocent

Though there wasn't enthusiastic response to an earlier call for ideas and feedback, I'm pushing on with putting up ideas and hoping readers and friends will actually respond. Soon.

<drumming fingers> Hey, is there anyone out there?? Bored...

Here's the idea this week.  How's about an LW story where a female attorney is shown making opening statements / summing up why her client is innocent despite his own estranged wife's accusation that he was the one who killed her lover? The estranged wife watches from the gallery and glares at both the prosecutor and her estranged husband who is the defendant.  As the attorney sits down, she recalls...

Flashback

The husband is facing his new attorney, a little surprised that it is his sister-in-law.  She asks him point blank if he's guilty.  He is silent and just when she pleads with him to talk to her if he wishes to mount a defence. Because things are not looking good for him and his last defence attorney had given up.

Just as she is about to give up and end the session, he surprises her by speaking up. He says quietly that his only guilt is in believing foolishly that those wedding vows were forever.

He reveals that he first suspected his wife,  her sister,  was having an affair when the neighbour hinted that a man was coming round rather often in the afternoons.  He had confronted his wife and that was when she'd offered to quietly divorce him if he'd give her a half share of the house and their investments.  She humiliates him by reminding him that she'd helped bail him out when his business went bankrupt during the financial crisis.  Her attitude clearly shows she no longer has any respect  for him.  He pleads with her to give their marriage another chance. For their child if not for their love.  She scoffs at him and says there's no love when he's  struggling to keep the job he'd found only after two years of being unemployed after he went out of business.  The attorney notices how he clenches his fist.  He says he refused to give her a divorce and she threw a tantrum.  He's shocked because it seems she's almost another person, not the woman he thought he knew. He decided to start monitoring the house to safeguard Ruth (the child)  and himself.

He's increasingly alarmed by what the monitoring shows.  She's bringing her lover around when their child is home from school and more than once the child is calling for her mother even as she impatiently tells the daughter to wait as she is busy with uncle Hank. When Ruth appears in the doorway,  Hank seems to laugh at her and say she'd better start calling him daddy, she refuses and runs away crying. David said he decided to agree to the divorce on condition that he gets custody, after seeing that.

When his attorney asks if there's more, he looks away and says no. She is suspicious and asks for the tapes from his friend.  She finds several disturbing videos. One particular video is damning,  it shows his wife and her lover plotting to accuse him of violence and therefore force his hand in terms of the settlement.  They are shown laughing.

The attorney is shown to gritting her teeth at how terrible her sister is.  His friend asks if she's going to help him.  After she says yes,  he brings out a video that he says is crucial evidence.  It is a video of the day of the attack.  She watches it and stares in shock at the screen.

She asks him at next interview why he didn't reveal there was crucial evidence. He says, obviously anguished,  that for all her vicious behaviour, Letty is still the mother of his child.

Last day of trial,  after a call by the defence to have a closed discussion with the judge and prosecution. When the prosecutor and defence exit the judge's chamber,  they look grim.  The wife is glaring at her husband while he is staring into space.  Judge asks if, due to new evidence,  the prosecutor has some announcement.  The prosecutor announces that due to the emergence of crucial evidence, they have decided to drop charges against the husband. The wife is shown to be outraged and protesting loudly.  The prosecutor also announces that charges will instead be filed against Letty Fogarty. She is shown being placed under arrest despite her protests.

The husband is crying as he is set free and goes home to see his child.

Epilogue
A year later.

The attorney visits ex-brother-in-law at his new house.  It's smaller but cozy.  After he puts Ruth to bed.  He thanks her again for all the help she has given him.  She asks why he's bringing it up again,  he's thanked her many times over the year.  He says softly that he's aware of the risk she took with her career and conscience.  She asks what he means.  He says that after the case and just before he moved out of old house, his neighbour had a drink with him and talked about how the attorney he had kept asking him questions and that she'd asked an odd question on her last visit: when had he first alerted David to his wife's infidelity?  His neighbour told him that he'd been so exasperated that he'd said the stubborn, honest fool next door had so much faith in his wife that he'd ignored his neighbour's hints for almost half a year before he'd finally seemed to wake up and confront his wife.  And that was when he'd asked his friend to show him the tape of the bedroom the day of the attack.  He asks the attorney why she'd risked so much to help him when she'd obviously realised the truth.

She replies, before she explained her motives for helping him,, she wants to know when he knew and what actually happened.

He smiles bitterly.  He said he'd been alarmed when his neighbour first hinted at Letty's unusual behaviour.  When he found out the truth,  he was devastated.  He decided against confronting her till his position improved.  He installed bugging equipment and knew where the cameras were.  Six months later,  he spotted an opportunity when his wife and her lover decided to set him up.  He says on the day of the attack,  he'd taken Letty's call and decided to let them think they'd succeeded in ambushing him.  As agreed,  he'd watched  as Hank punched and kicked Letty as they'd planned. That Letty had fallen unconscious was a plus.  He walked in and started pleading for mercy from a blind corner. He laughed as he recalled Hank's confusion.  As Hank approached him, he brought out a stun gun and stuns him. Unexpectedly,Hank fell and hit his head on the corner of the foot of the bed. David is momentarily stunned by what has happened but recovers and calls the police.

She says she realised something wasn't right when the neighbour said he'd hinted at Letty's affair earlier than David had claimed.  When she looked more closely at the crucial evidence,  she'd seen a certain flash in a corner of the mirror, it was a part of a tattoo that was familiar to her. She'd recognised part of the tattoo as she'd suggested the design when he'd proposed to her sister and asked what would symbolise his vows to her sister as Letty was demanding proof that he'd be faithful forever. At that moment she'd asked herself why if he'd been defending himself as the soundtrack of the video suggested,  his arm was raised and therefore reflected in the mirror.  She says she believes his claim that Hank's death was an accident and hopes David can start life anew now that he is free of the nightmarish marriage.

She wishes him well and leaves. She recalls the design she'd suggested to David as strains of a song plays.

BTW tentative title is Innocent.

So what do you think? Let me know.  I'll be waiting for feedback.

Roots of Inspiration

Every now and then, I like to re-read some of the stories that have inspired me to write my own stories. Recently, I have re-read some of the stories that inspired me on Literotica. And while some of the original stories have somehow disappeared, many remain and in the LW category, many of the greats are still writing. Despite having read some of the stories many times, I still feel the roil of emotions and feel the call of sequels LOL

From Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/pin/165225880051269837/

Now if only I could find the energy and time to edit the TSOAB epilogue as well as write the rest of the 20+ stories sitting in folders.

Updates and Links

Almost eight weeks ago,  I was unexpectedly warded and underwent a whole series of tests and an operation.  Since then,  it has been a slow and painful recovery. I am glad to be back on my feet. Physiotherapy has been painful and expensive but no argument from my end against that.

Following that experience, I am in no hurry to be back on the posting route.  I know I have missed posting deadlines but seriously,  after what happened two months earlier,  I am relearning to re-examine my life and what's really important.

Yes,  I will start writing and posting but it'll be at a much slower pace. Meanwhile,  here are some links for recent posts including Destroying Fantasies Part 1:

TSOAB Epilogue Preview and Links

Finally, TSOAB epilogue is being sent out to beta readers gradually. Thinking of re-adjusting the beta group after this, volunteers for reading torture pleasure, send me a message!

As Destroying Fantasies Part 1 links are all live now, hope readers will stop asking where they may access it. The links again in case readers missed last week's post:

https://eroftasy.blogspot.com/2017/07/destroying-fantasies-11.html

https://eroftasy.blogspot.com/2017/07/destroying-fantasies-12.html

And here's the preview for TSOAB epilogue:

Greed. That was what saved me. Specifically, the greed of a scientist seeking to enrich himself by selling the synthesized version of Botulinum neurotoxin he’d created with the help of his trusty laboratory technician. The same scientist who, increasingly alarmed by the emotional instability of said technician, subsequently replaced the vials (he’d agreed to give the technician) with highly-diluted samples. He’d even thrown in a vial of the anti-toxin he’d crafted for the buyer to the lot given to the technician. Of course, it helped that my loving wife had retrieved the anti-toxin when her accomplice tossed it.

Not nearly enough? That's what I thought about this sweetie!

And congratulations to DFWBeast for his new stories, yes, plural. They're both good reads and I already called dibs on a sequel to the one to be posted soon!

Creating A Balance

Trying to create some balance and get back to normal life ie working at day job, starting with working from home. Been doing that while bearing with the pain and physiotherapy sessions. Well, bills have to be paid somehow.

Resorting to sweeties for comfort,  just looking at them make me happy lol! At least it's countering the bitter medication.

Still editing that book review,  balancing the need to be honest with the urge to be kind.  Still going to be honest,  just not brutally so. Going to temper it with a little kindness. Guess the sugar is improving my character too!

Sunday 2 July 2017

An Unexpected Crisis

As friends and readers who are connected to my social media platforms would have gleaned from some brief posts over the last month, I had an unexpected health crisis in June.  It's taken a relatively long stay in the hospital, an MRI and an operation for me to regain some measure of health.

I did contemplate doing some writing and posting in that time but frankly,  pain and rehabilitation made it quite impossible.  I am aware that some posting deadlines were missed and I apologise to readers who are annoyed.

I did consider posting the conclusion to TSOAB on Literotica, but it hasn't been read by my beta readers yet, so I'm holding off.  Quality vs  simply trying to meet deadlines or please critics. The choice was relatively easy. Besides,  the haters will hate,  so why bother? Lol.

Anyway,  here's an update on some posts:

Conclusion to TSOAB to go out soon to beta readers.

A brief review will be posted soon; editing the book review, while the new book made eyes roll (not in a good way), the reviewer felt she just had to compete the series since it really triggered a strong response when parts 1 and 2 were read. Trust me,  Part 3 made the various reviewers want to smack someone.  If anything,  part three (and now,  the author has declared a part 4)destroyed any halo there ever was possible for the hero.  So watch for the new Erorevue post. Have a read of the review for parts 1-2 first!

Still pondering what next to write,  think the LW bug is too strong - every now and then I see a cheating spouse in narratives and movies.  Sighs.  Guess it's a good thing the next Legends day is on Independence Day huh?

Sunday 4 June 2017

Mixture of Emotions

This week has been a roller coaster of emotions. The attacks back in England brought sadness and some measure of anger. Seriously, why are we busy killing each other when we've got so many problems plaguing the human race?

The usual negativity from the haters to the latest story post was slightly depressing. Then again, it was nothing new and as long as I know I'm doing right, I'm tossing them on the pile of trolls. More on it later.

Work is hectic but going well thus far. And ideas are still surfacing faster than I can deal with them lol. Also enjoying a friend's new stories along with some sweeties. More specifically, a glutinous rice and lotus paste dumpling and a Beard Papa custard puff  :D Yums!

And now for some updates on two issues: Destroying Fantasies Part 1 and the conclusion of The Story Of a Button. Destroying Fantasies Part 1 was removed by the site admins because the author of the original story complained and didn't like me "screwing with the characters".

I respect the site admin's decision though frankly, if the case was pursued legally, I am on sound ground. For more on the Destroying Fantasies saga, read this. Those interested in the story, I will post it on a blog site soon, so watch this space.

As for the challenge to write the conclusion to TSOAB, I have to admit the trolls really lived up to expectations. All the bellyaching about loopholes and how the story can only have one ending ~ eyeroll ~ maybe it's my bad because I should have said this challenge is not for the fainthearted or trolls lacking the requisite creativity to see their way round the "loopholes", "dead end" and "vague details" to a conclusion. And frankly my dear trolls... (fill in the blanks, hint: think Rhett Butler) LOL Have fun people!

Pushing Buttons

Starting final edits of my latest story. Immensely grateful to beta readers for their suggestions and opinions!

As said previously, I'll be inviting readers to write the conclusion in the month before the conclusion is posted.

Before you read the story, have a look at the meme/toon:

Enjoy!

And watch for the new story!

Inspiration

Inspiration comes in many forms and Literotica has pointed me in certain directions many times and recently, it was in the direction of this article https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/11/magazine/is-an-open-marriage-a-happier-marriage.html

Now, it could be the perspective of the writer but the wife's reaction or lack of at times was disturbing and spoke of selfish desires that overrode the considerations of others. She finds problems in her husband's character and other relationship but is apparently capable of excusing obvious problems in her other lover. It is almost a classic LW story and I hope to write a sequel to it soon :)

In other news, I'm still waiting for response from some beta readers but barring unexpected delays, the story should be posted soon 😄 I'll be preoccupied with work conferences for the next fortnight, so readers following me on social media, hope you won't get too bored of the temporary silence LOL

Sunday 14 May 2017

The Countdown Begins

A great believer in getting over the bitter before the sweet, I have bad and good news for readers. The bad news is: it's going to take a tiny while more before the story is posted. The good? Well, beta readers have been giving the new story pretty positive feedback. So hopefully things will go well. Here's the link for the sneak preview posted a couple of weeks earlier:

In the meantime, get a load of my stress relievers: Food, glorious food! From avocado ice cream to fluffy organic pancakes with caramelised bananas and haxelnut cookie dough with sunflower seeds and dried cranberries. Yums!

Coined a new phrase for food porn: #foodsturbation LOL enjoy people!

The Eliot April Conundrum

Now,  I'm not normally a superstitious person. And that's when some smartass usually pipes up and says 'the lady doth protest overly much'. April, however,  has never failed to live up to my superstition about it, courtesy of Mr T.S. Eliot.

Glad as I am about the month ending,  I'm not looking forward to May and the mountain of work and events that awaits me.  Why can't I just win the lottery?  LOL

Anyway,  before anyone asks the obvious "is this post going anywhere?", I'll answer: Yes.  Maybe not in any release date but certainly in a challenge: I will be releasing an LW short story with the ending already written but not posted. I will schedule the ending to be posted about a month after the main story.  The challenge is for readers and writers to write their own conclusion to the story,  posting it with an identifier that will be stated in the main story. The main story and challenge will be posted in the next couple of weeks.

I'm off to the immediate challenge of reading Elif Şafak's The Forty Rules of Love.  Need to do it in three days because I'm supposed to present on it during the launch of a work community library 😁

Sunday 23 April 2017

Delays, Distractions and Delicious ^^

I know many readers are probably already anticipating more delays and excuses,  am personally hoping this is the last of them. I'm being haunted by LW requests and inspiration.  LOL

Plodding along with the writing (4 different stories,  not counting sequels) and may have something posted soon. And as requested by several readers who have contacted me via the feedback function, I will post Destroying Fantasies Part 1 on my blog soon. Watch for it!

And while I'm not G-like in any way, I do believe in "request and thou shalt be given". Okay it's gotten me into trouble occasionally (such as with the Destroying Fantasies saga),  but hey,  why would you want to deny readers satisfaction. Lol so here's the link to the original K. T.  Morrison series that Moving On was the conclusion of. It's available on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Losing-His-Wife-Cuckold-Tragedy-ebook/dp/B01J93ZCMY

And courtesy of work yours truly has had some eye candy in the form of a potential author.  He is hot and knows it. So yes,  he might not be the nicest guy but he is cute. And even cuter when he strides that was to the nearest cafe.  Haha!  Look for a Balkans hero soon!

I've had to conceal his full face because otherwise it'd be too easy to track him down.  And anyway,  from the discussion we had,  he does,  unfortunately,  fit the pretty face hunk who's a bit shorter on the erm brain capacity.  Still,  enjoy the stretch of the shirt people!

Could be even sweeter than the strawberry croissant lol I do love sweeties!

A Rejuvenating Easter Weekend

It's been a pretty good Easter weekend, minor irritants aside.

Liked the Easter message of waking up. One of the few sermons/homilies in recent years that I actually remember.

And I finally had the chance to watch Fast and Furious 8. Despite all the rumoured squabbling and rivalry, the movie turned out pretty darn good ! Liked the storyline even if it was a tad predictable. But then again, most people don't watch action movies about cars for the plot ~ and I'm just being honest.

And having heard enough accolades about the Statham vs Johnson verbal exercises, I looked forward to the crossfire between the two. I was amused but not impressed by the exchange. If anything, Helen Mirren stole the show with direct, simple humour in the scene where she emotionally blackmailed Statham. Of course, it's a toss up whether Dame Helen or the baby won the awww awards LOL Look for the full review on EroRevue!

And so I leave you with views of my very un-health-conscious Easter lunch (fish and chips and everything nice) plus my longtime favourite entertainment hunk. If readers can't tell the difference, they're forgiven LOL

Sunday 9 April 2017

Palm Sunday and the week that was

Finally made it to church for mass and it was Palm Sunday.  I won't pretend there was nothing that irritated me or made me depressed,  there were a few but what made things better was the reflection that nothing really matters since everything is in G's hands. And so I leave it to the powers that be to resolve matters.

For more mundane things,  I leave it to the academics and writers who are my authors to work out a schedule that works for them 'cos seriously, if they delay or fub their proofs,  the only people who'll suffer the consequences are them LOL

And in the meantime,  I enjoy local cuisine from local fried noodles (mee goreng) to a breakfast burrito, baked cheese tarts and my favourite soya curds! #FoodPorn!

And I'm expelling all the bad emotions from the last few exhausting weeks. No idea what I am talking about? Read http://judithloewe.blogspot.com/2017/04/of-custard-puffs-and-previews.html for the back stories and the links to the saga!

Another piece of good news: an FB friend's debut novel is out now for pre-order https://www.amazon.com/Morrows-Horizon-Morrow-Women-Book-ebook/dp/B06XZWWQNC Grab a hot read for under a $1! Of Custard Puffs And Previews

Yet another week and yet more exhaustion. So that explains why yours truly stuffed her face with custard puffs.

Had a charcoal puff from Proofer yesterday

And this nicely sweet one from Beard Papa

And here's a quick preview for a story I hope to post soon.

Regret.

Was that the name of the sharp pain fading into a dull burn and an indescribable ache that sat in my gut?

I could almost see the inscription on the headstone: XXXX, (1974-2017), Beloved Husband and Father. Of course, Willa would probably replace the “Beloved” with “Asshole” or “Jackass” or whatever descriptive that seemed appropriate. That is if she got away with murder. My murder. Or my death. Semantics was the least of my concerns right now.

A dark shadow. At least that was what it looked like to my rapidly blurring vision. It was that azure blue of her irises that told me it was my loving wife who now loomed over me. She looked like an avenging angel. She probably was one. Great, so till the end, I was the fallen one. Lucifer, about to be slain by the sword of good. Somewhere in the beyond, Catherine Dubois, the Sunday school teacher who had warned my mother of my “inherent wickedness”, was chuckling.

For why I decided to pre-pone / accelerate this one,  see http://eroftasy.blogspot.com/2017/03/reaction-to-vitriolic-response_19.html and http://judithloewe.blogspot.com/2017/03/exhausting-but-fun.html.

Have fun!

Exhausting But Fun!

Apologies to readers who have had to endure a long silence. Was surrounded by events and work in the last two weeks. See mini summary below!

And a guest role in a "saga":

http://eroftasy.blogspot.com/2017/03/reaction-to-vitriolic-response_19.html

Completed a plot outline for part of  a story I'm writing with a friend. To me, it sounds great, not sure if my story partner thinks so too! LOL

Still chipping away at two stories, including one which has an open invitation to a story hackathon. LOL Well,  I do believe in putting my money where my mouth is 😏

At least 6 other stories on the backburner and a possible new job - busy times!

Sunday 12 March 2017

A Mixed Bag

As the title of this post suggests,  it's been pretty much a mixed bag this week.  Made no progress on the writing but very very happy for a friend who has come up with a pretty good plot with a bit of nudging from 😈 Think wicked laughter.

Anyway,  just to make up for the lack of news on the writing front,  let me throw a bit of a teaser your way.  My next immediate story is about a footballer (the one where you dribble the ball with your feet, as seen below lol), a reporter and a WAG.  It is LW so yes,  I'll have the usual shark bait.  LMFAO,  I do like to stoke the ire of those critics haha!

Anyway,  it's Lent,  so I'll keep the posts and stuff relatively sober.  That said,  this is what I do when the haters start flaming - I do love sweeties!

Sunday 5 March 2017

Grouses, Lent Penances and Writing

Much as I would love to stop grousing,  the cough that seems determined to cling to me is still dogging me. And hence making me cranky,  well,  it might as well be useful even as an excuse!

Lent penances,  going well on the food end,  not so well on the reduce cussing end.  Well,  it was reduce not cut out cussing. 😜

Writing is going,  kinda... Just at the pace of somewhere between a mule and a camel.. use your imagination haha!

Now that's a scary picture! LOL

Sunday 26 February 2017

Food Gras

Yes,  I'm facing a bit of a dry spell in terms of writing. Not in terms of ideas thankfully but rather time.

Work is crazy this year and health ain't great. And I've been stress eating.

So here's some food porn for ya. I'm eating in advance - specifically in advance of the Lent season that starts Wednesday

Do enjoy people!

Reaction To Comments

Finally pushed out the piece that I'd written near the end of last year. Everything has been delayed because of a combination of time crunch, exhaustion and illness.

The feedback has been interesting. Here are some points of feedback I'd like to deal with here:

  • Wordy: I've heard this numerous times and I'm not quite sure what it implies. I've gone from posting eight to four to two pages. I'm not sure how less wordy I can get.  Should I hit the return key more often after a one-liner? Lol

  • No action/going no where/too much telling: Not to be a smartass but conclusions are not meant to introduce something new unless you're writing a lead-in for the next installment. They are supposed to conclude. And narrative, by definition,  is telling.  Technically, unless you're producing a video or illustration,  there's no show.  The "show" that readers often refer to is still descriptive. Remember,  there's no show and tell script in operation here.

  • Repetition: I agree with some of the comments on there being repetition. For me, that is a replication (yes,  pun intended) of the process of event and memory where memory replays the event and evokes or adds new layers of meaning  and emotion to an event or symbol.

I thank all readers for their feedback, good intentions or otherwise. In particular,  I thank the LW greats and legends who have taken the time to lend me their opinions - a virtual kiss for y'all! Don't be a stranger now!
